Frequently Asked Questions
Can heat pumps be repaired?
Same as your air conditioner or furnace, your heat pump can be repaired if it has a problem. The technology involved may be slightly different, but it’s not an inoperable black box; it’s more akin to your air conditioner or refrigerator than anything else in your home, using similar technologies to move heat around. Of course, like any complex appliance in your home, sometimes the problem can be so extensive that repairs don’t make sense, and a heat pump replacement will be necessary.
Why is my heat pump not cooling?
There are a few reasons your heat pump might fail to cool your home. The reversing valve, which changes the way the refrigerant flows through your system, might be stuck, which would result in your heat pump staying on “heat,” regardless of your settings. The refrigerant levels might be too low to carry heat around the system effectively, meaning it can’t produce cold air to blow. Or the blowers and fans that move air around to cool you may have failed, meaning there’s cold air to be had — but you’re not going to get to feel it.
Should I turn my heat pump off in extreme cold?
As temperatures drop below 40 degrees or so, a heat pump begins to lose efficiency. It actually takes until 30 degrees or so for it to become less efficient than a furnace, becoming increasingly inefficient past that point. In extremely cold weather, you may struggle to get much warmth at all from your heat pump. While it will work, for the most part, it will be less efficient. If you have a system with a furnace or boiler in place alongside your heat pump, you can certainly switch over to your alternative heat source once temperatures drop below freezing, but you don’t have to if you don’t mind the loss of efficiency and prefer the way your heat pump’s heat feels or the control of a mini-split system.
